Methane (CH4) is a primary component of natural gas, when emitted directly into the atmosphere, it is a potent greenhouse gas. According to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Methane has a 100-year global warming potential 25-30 times to that of Carbon dioxide (CO2), and a 100-year global temperature potential 6-fold greater than CO2. IPCC further estimates the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of fossil methane is 85 times greater than CO2 over a 20-year period.
The main sources of anthropogenic methane emissions are agriculture, including: fermentation, manure management, crop cultivation, landfills, wastewater treatment, coal mines, and the oil and gas industries.
PT Anglo Euro Energi Indonesia is focusing on sources of emissions in oil & gas industries which includes amongst others:
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) combined with CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is an economical and effective method for the reduction of carbon emissions.
Combined with CCS techniques, CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) has been applied to reduce CO2 emissions, resulting in a net zero emission of CO2. Carbon is stored underground during oil production, resulting in a significant improvement of oil production through CO2 injection into reservoirs compared to the conventional water injection production.
CO2-EOR provides a green and economical way to improve oil production in aged, low producing oil wells. The crude oil that is derived from CO2-EOR is generally termed as “carbon negative oil”.
